Development trend of electric vehicle charging technology in China

With the increase in the driving range of new energy vehicles, the power battery power is generally large, the problem of "slow charging" of electric vehicles is more prominent, and the user's demand for rapid recharge is increasing, and high-power charging has become an inevitable choice for high-endurance models. There are two technical routes for high-power charging: high-current route, typically represented by Tesla; High voltage routes, typically represented by Porsche's 800V high voltage technology. Under the high-current technology route, more heat will be released when charging, and high temperature will lead to a sudden reduction in the capacity of the power battery, permanent damage to the battery cell and other phenomena, affecting the charging efficiency and even causing safety risks. In addition, the high current has higher requirements for the hardware equipment and cables of the charging pile, and the thick cables will reduce the convenience of charging. High voltage routes can alleviate the above problems, but there are disadvantages of high component costs. Despite this, domestic and foreign car companies still generally choose the high-voltage route, since 2021, a number of car companies have released mass production models and super fast charging solutions based on 800V high-voltage platforms, such as Porsche, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, BYD and so on.

On the other hand, under the active exploration of charging infrastructure operators and equipment manufacturers, there has been a trend of "DC" for low-power charging. Operators believe that the low-power DC charging pile has lower output power and higher safety; Compared with AC slow charge, it does not need to be converted by vehicle charger, and the power output can be scheduled, which is more suitable for V2G technology. If low-power DC charging is promoted, the vehicle charger device can be canceled, reducing the cost of the vehicle and saving the vehicle space. A charging operator has carried out pilot work of low-power DC charging for residential areas and industrial parks in Qingdao, Nanjing, Chengdu and other places, and said that in the future, AC charging piles will no longer be built in residential areas, and will be converted to the construction of low-power DC smart charging networks. It is reported that the State Grid is also carrying out low-power DC pilot work.
